M. Zablul Tareq, Scientist

As an agriculture graduate specializing in plant physiology, I have been researching the natural fiber crop 'Jute', often called the 'golden fiber', for over a decade. My expertise includes jute fiber production technology, seed production, collection, storage, seed health, mutation breeding, and the physiology of abiotic stress, such as waterlogging. I have a particular interest in using jute leaves as a leafy vegetable, focusing on their nutritional properties and medicinal uses. This interest has led to the development of two jute varieties specifically for leafy vegetable use. Currently, I am researching microbes to expedite the jute retting process with minimal water. Additionally, I am exploring the eco-friendly extraction and preparation of nano-crystalline cellulose (NCC) as a substitute for polythene in the packaging industry. My goal is to harness the multipurpose potential of jute for both fiber and leafy vegetable.

About Me

I am a plant scientist who is particularly interested in working with plant physiological traits. From last 10 years I am working on jute and Kenaf plants for their morphology, physiology, genetic diversity assessment and nutritional trait analysis of wild and cultivated jute and kenaf for leafy vegetable purposes. Now I am interested to use jute and it’s debridges as nano-cellulose preparation and product development due to it’s natural degradability. To fulfill my dream, I have been working as a Scientist (Applied Research) under the project entitled “Basic and Applied Research on Jute” at Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Manikganj, Bangladesh since October, 2011. Here I am experienced with crossing between wild and cultivated jute genotypes to develop early flowering, nutrients rich, and short durable jute variety. In this journey, I am inspired by the groundbreaking work of Professor Dr. Maqsudul Alam, the principal investigator of the BARJ@BJRI project, whose pioneering efforts in sequencing the jute genome have revolutionized the field. My work, in collaboration with these cutting-edge developments, strives to push the boundaries of jute’s potential—from agricultural innovation to sustainable product development. Together, with a focus on innovation and environmental sustainability, I aim to contribute to the future of jute as a versatile, eco-friendly solution for tomorrow’s challenges.
